Architect
It was likely that Jack was going to follow a path in architecture, given his father, Michael is an architect. Raised in Launceston, Jack studied architecture at the University of Tasmania, graduating with a Masters degree in 2016.
As a child, Jack was regularly found with a pencil in hand. And while there were times that he contemplated a career in the arts, he was also concerned about supporting himself – hence the decision to study architecture, a more tangible choice. But his love for the arts continues as he gravites to everything from the Renaissance to the 20th century and from paintings to architecture and design. Jack singles out the architect and designer Michael Graves, a name synonymous with post-modern design from the early 1980s. As well as Graves’ architecture, it’s his distinctive household objects, such as his kettles, that continue to resonate decades later.
While his family remain in Launceston, Jack moved to Melbourne in 2017 – realising there were opportunities there to work in a larger architectural pool. Initially working with architect Zoe Geyer, he moved on to working with OOF! architecture for over five years. Known for its ability to create homes on extremely tight sites, the position provided him with the opportunity to work on challenging sites in inner-city Melbourne. For Jack, the ability to communicate clearly with clients, and interpret their ideas, is paramount. And his time with OOF! architecture enabled him to sharpen his skills for creating efficient solutions that required little space.
Jack recently joined Hindley & Co and appreciates the ambience of the office as much as the projects the practice is working on. After seven years working as an architect, he sees the value architecture and design can have on people’s lives, hence his preference to focus on residential projects.
